Needville steals opening victory with late rally
There were far fewer football games in the Houston area than expected during the last week of August. But the season opener in Needville might have been difficult to top.
The Blue Jays erased a two-touchdown Livingston lead in the final two minutes to take a 36-35 victory Aug. 29 at Blue Jay Stadium. Walker Warncke capped an outstanding performance with a fumble recovery, his fourth touchdown and the two-point conversion to put Needville in front during a dramatic sequence.
Warncke, a two-way standout last year as well, carried 22 times for 171 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Needville offense. His first touchdown run produced a 14-0 lead, and he added another before halftime as the teams tied at 21.
Livingston led 28-21 after the third quarter, though a key red-zone stop kept the Blue Jays within reach. The Lions took a 35-21 lead in the fourth before Warncke scored his third touchdown late in the game to cut the lead.
The Blue Jays opened the game with a 77-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Baker to Blake Maresh, who finished with six receptions for 116 yards. Baker completed 14 of 23 passes for 228 yards and two interceptions.
Cole Todd, Dax Bridges and Tannor Baker combined for eight receptions and 117 yards. Freshman Sherman Jones carried eight times for 35 yards. Pedro Cavasos converted all four of his point-after kicks.
The Blue Jays host Hargrave this week in a meeting of ranked area teams.
